Why are we here, is there a purpose to life?

  • God has purpose for all things in His creation!
  • To understand the purpose of life in total, one must study God’s will, in His Word, concerning each and every aspect of life. This answer seeks to give you a general answer.
  • God originally created man as an expression of His love and to inhabit and care for the objects of His creation. At the conclusion of God’s creative week, God said that everything He made was “very good’.  The word “good” does not just mean that it is not just generally good, but that everything had purpose and was useful in some capacity.
    • Genesis 1:31, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. …”
  • In the beginning, God gave Adam and Eve a job to do on earth:
    • Genesis 1:26-28, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. (27)  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.  (28)  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”
      • Adam and Eve were the first caretakers of the earth.
      • Since then, we also are to be good stewards of our earth, as God refers to man this way in the Bible.
    • Beyond the purpose of stewardship, there is another purpose to our lives.
      • After Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, God’s purpose for man was expanded. (Genesis 3)
      • Mankind is still given the creation to rule over, but now man is in a state of sinfulness, that caused his relationship to God to be broken.
        • If man dies in this broken sinful state, he will have to be thrust into outer darkness amongst all those who have chosen to reject God’s plan of deliverance for man’s sinful condition.
        • Today the primary need of mankind is to be redeemed from their sinful condition, and to be restored to a right relationship with God and creation.
      • After we become God’s children through salvation, God gives us a new life, with new purpose, of which God desires we enjoy.
        • John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
        • 1 Timothy 6:17, “Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;”
      • It is a blessing to know that God loves us!
        • John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
      • He proved His love for us, by coming to this earth, to die for our sins, be crucified, and raise from the dead!
        • 1 John 4:7-10, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. (8)  He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.  (9)  In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.  (10)  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
          • Our time on earth is just a small part of our overall existence.
            • James 4:14-15, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (15)  For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”
          • God created us to live beyond our time on earth.
            • We must keep this in mind, as we explore God’s will for our lives, for it is far more reaching, than just our brief time on earth.
            • Rest assured, that no matter who you are, what you have done, where you have been, what you have thought, etc, God has a purpose and will for your life! If you need helping searching this out in the Bible, please let us know.
