Right and Wrong, is there a standard of truth?

Right and Wrong, is there a standard of truth?

  • Prior to Christ’s crucifixion, He stood before Pontus Pilate, the governor of Jerusalem for Rome. Pilate asked this question: “…What is truth?…”  John 18:38
    • This has been a question that mankind has been asking for some time.
      • Webster’s defines truth: the real facts about something; the quality or state of being true; the body of real things, events, and facts ACTUALITY
      • The Bible warns us not to be deceived.
        • When we are deceived, we see things in such a way, that it is not reality, or truthful.
      • In order to keep from being deceived, we need a standard to just truth by.
        • When a carpenter is constructing something, he uses a tape measure, which is made to a standard measurement.
          • As many times as he measured something, to be sure he is right, he checks himself based on a standard that is an accurate measure.
        • Life is the same way.
          • God describes a timeframe in history called the period of the “Judges”.
            • The theme of that timeframe was, “Every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
              • Judges 17:6, “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.”
            • We can’t be our own source of truth, any more than a carpenter can be his own source of truth.
              • When everyone tries to be their own source of truth, it only causes confusion and chaos. This is not God’s plan, but it is what we are experiencing in this day that we live.
            • This begs the question then, “What is the right source of truth for life?”
              • God claims that the source of truth, is the Bible.
                • 2 Timothy 2:15, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
                • John 1:1-2, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2)  The same was in the beginning with God.”
                • 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17)  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
                • 2 Peter 1:20-21, “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. (21)  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
                • Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
                • John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
              • God presents the Bible to us, as the owner’s manual for life.
                • 2 Peter 1:3, “According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:”
                  • The Bible is the only source of truth, that He has given us to judge things by.
                    • 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21, “Despise not prophesyings. (21)  Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
                  • It is by the truth of God’s Word, that we can know what is true, and what is a lie.
