How can I have peace in my heart?

  • John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
    • Peace = Websters defines peace as a state of quiet or tranquility, freedom from disturbance or agitation.
      • Jesus tells us the way to settle your heart and to keep it from being troubled.
        • John 14:1, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me (Jesus Christ).”
      • In Hebrews 7:2, Jesus is called the “King of peace”.
        • The reason people are unsettled in their hearts is because deep down inside, they know they are at odds with God.
          • To be at peace with God, you need the issue that has broken your relationship with Him settled.
            • Romans 5:8-10, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (9)  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.  (10)  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
            • Colossians 1:20-23, “And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. (21)  And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled  (22)  In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:  (23)  If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;”
          • You might be wondering how your relationship with God became broken in the first place.
            • That happened with Adam and Eve, and has been passed down to all of their children, you and I included.
              • Romans 5:12-21, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (13)  (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  (14)  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.  (15)  But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  (16)  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.  (17)  For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)  (18)  Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.  (19)  For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.  (20)  Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:  (21)  That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
            • There is a lot to unpack from this above passage, but it is obvious, by this text, that sin entered into our world through Adam, and is passed down to each of us. It was this event that affected our relationship with God.  Christ came to earth, shed His blood and died on the cross, and was resurrected from the grave, to restore us to God.
