Can I trust the Bible?

Can I trust the Bible?

  • There are many avenues that this question can take someone. I seek to give a straightforward answer from the bible, as to the basic question, “Can I trust the Bible as God’s Word?”
  • 2 Peter 1:16-21, “For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17  For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.  18  And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.  19  We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:  20  Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  21  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
    • The Bible is not a bunch of man-made stories, gathered over time, in a religious context.
    • The Bible is God’s Word to man. God spake to man through the conduit of men.  God calls His Word, “a more sure word of prophecy” and says that “ye do well that ye take heed”.
    • The Bible came not by the will of man, but by direct revelation from God.
    • After the giving of the Word of God, through holy men called prophets, He then used chosen men of God to pen the words in a book. This scribe process was overseen by God Himself.
      • Repeatedly in the Bible, God directs His Word to be written in a book.
        • Exodus 17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, …”
        • Deuteronomy 17:18, “And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites:”
        • Isaiah 30:8, “Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:”
        • Jeremiah 30:2, “Thus speaketh the LORD God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.”
        • Jeremiah 36:2-3, “Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day. 3  It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.”
        • Revelation 1:9-11, “I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10  I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,  11  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.”
      • God spoke His Word to men. Those men, as led by the Holy Spirit, recorded God’s Word in books.
        • These books were then compiled in one book, called the Bible.
          • God calls the Bible a perfect book!
            • 1 Corinthians 13:10, “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.”
              • At the writing of 1 Corinthians, the Bible was not complete, but now it is.
            • The last book to be given is the book of Revelation. At the conclusion of this book, God gave us warning, not to add or take away from His Words in completed Bible.
              • Revelation 22:7, “Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book.”
              • Revelation 22:17-20, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. 18  For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  19  And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.  20  He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.”
            • Yes, we can trust God’s Word! He didn’t just give it to us as a matter of history, He gave it to us, so that we can know that He loves us!  And that He has a purpose and plan for our lives!
              • 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
            • The Bible is God’s love letter to man!
              • If you will read God’s love letter to you, it can make you wise unto salvation!
                • 2 Timothy 3:15, “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

  • Unfortunately, the devil, the author of confusion, as flooded the market with a bunch of books, called bibles, but disagree with each other.

  • God’s Word is eternal, and will never pass away. Many men have tried to rid the earth of God’s Word, but this will never happen.  God has promised that His Word shall stand forever!
    • Matthew 24:35, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
    • Mark 13:31, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”
    • Luke 21:33, “Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”
    • John 12:46-50, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness. 47  And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.  48  He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.  49  For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.  50  And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.”
    • Psalms 12:6-7, “The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. 7  Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.”
